Why this area?
We used to holiday every year in Tuscany but then one year we discovered the Soouthern Marche and we have never been back to Tuscany. It is so beautiful and unspoilt. The views from our house are just magical and it is in an utterly tranquil spot so all you can hear is birdsong. We are constantly exploring the surrounding countryside which is wonderful and has lots of medieval hilltop towns (2 of which you can see from the house) containing hidden art treasures. The local people are charming and although no much english is spoken, they are really friendly and love it if you even attempt a few words of Italian. There are good local restaurants - the food is not particularly sophistocated but it is well cooked and very cheap! The two houses are set in 30 acres of fields and fruit plantations which you can walk in. You may see deer and the signs of wild boar. Sarnano, the local town, is just 10 minutes drive away and has 2 small supermarkets, lots of little shops selling cheese, wine, bread, clothes etc. It also has a bank, pharmacy, a spa where you can get beauty treatments and a museum. We like swimming in Lake Fiastra (20 minutes drive into the mountains). It is warm in summer, has a pebbly beach and is relatively deserted. Go to the dam end for peace.
The houses:
The houses are very close to each other and are perfect for families or a group of friends holidaying together. You can eat and play together but yet be separate if you want to be. Both houses are old but have been recently renovated to a high standard with good quality furniture and art on the walls. The houses have traditional wood beamed ceilings and either tile or parquet flooring. Casa della Marchesa has its own private chapel, a large living room with open fire, a huge kitchen with hob, double oven, 2 fridges, dishwasher and large dining table. There is a double room, a twin room, a single room and bathroom on the ground floor. Upstairs are two double bedrooms each with a bathroom. There is a separate laundry room. Casa Luisa has a large dining hall with open fire, 2 living rooms, a kitchen with hob, oven, fridge and dishwasher. There is a laundry room and a bathroom on the ground floor. Upstairs are 2 double bedrooms (one with an extra single bed), 2 twin bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Both houses have terraces and outside dining tables with umbrellas.
The pool is huge (14 x 6 metres) and is surrounded by terracing with sunloungers and umbrellas. It has stunning views.
The area
The houses are close to the famous Sibelline National Park which has wolves, lynx and other wild animals. There is skiing in the winter and walking, climbing and riding in the summer. There is a paragliding school about 5kms away and quad biking at Fiastra. For the more culturally inclined there are roman ruins, the roman city of Ascoli Piceno, many churches and galleries and the opera festival at Macerate
