Four bedroom detatched villa
Our House
Our house is on a small complex (91 houses) on the outskirts of Kusadasi (8 miles) in the Turkish district of Devutler.
Kusadasi is a major holiday resort with loads of good shops, restaurants, bars and nightlife. All the big cruise liners call at Kusadasi to savour the local attractions. The main attraction for the tourists is the wonderful scenery and the ancient site of Ephesus.
Devutler is renown for its fruit and vegetable growing. Our house is surrounded on three sides by a peach orchard. The best times for the peach crop are June and July.
The house is a detached three stories, 4-bedroom house with two and a half bathrooms. It is fully furnished with sleeping for up to 8 people. It has air-conditioning on the lower two floors and portable fans on the upper floor. The main bathroom has a bath and a shower plus an automatic washing machine. No need to take too many clothes or to take dirty ones home with you. The kitchen has a large fridge and freezer plus a duel fuel cooker. If the gas runs out mid meal you will still have one ring that runs off electricity. The lounge has a three-piece suite, satellite TV, DVD player with some films and music cd's. The house has four balconies with wonderful views of the sea and mountains. Outside we have a lovely patio area with a built in barbecue and an outside shower for when you return from the beach or pool.
The garden is a low maintenance one with a few flowers and four fruit trees. Behind the house we have room to park your hire car.
Swimming pool
The complex and pool
The complex is small with only 91 houses all the same as ours. At the moment there is no direct access to the main road so we have to go through another site to get out. This should be remedied by 2006 when the access road is due for completion.
The nearest place to catch a dolmus (minibus) is through the peach orchards, (see walk to the beach) towards the beach.
The pool was only completed in September 2004 and we have not yet been in it. While it was empty I measured the depth and the length at all points.
Swimming pool
The swimming pool is 8.8 meters wide and 28 meters long.
At its deepest point it is 1.8 meters (6 foot) deep and it is this depth up to the fountain in the centre (see picture below). It then ramps up quite steeply to 1.2 meters (approx 4 foot). It remains at this depth for the remainder of its length but with a section for children at just .6 meters (approx 20 inches).
Shops and shopping
Shops and shopping
The main shops for clothes, duty free, and souvenirs are in Kusadasi but we have lots of shops in our area. I would recommend the Tuesday and the Friday fresh food market for your main food shopping in Kusadasi.
If you are really lazy or just want to chill out you can phone our local shop and he will deliver any thing that he keeps. His number from a mobile is 00 90 256681 1336 or 00 90 256681 2643.
Be careful with your mobile over here. It will cost a lot to make any phone calls over here in Turkey.
If you follow the directions for the walk to the beach, it is only 5 minutes walk to the shop for some really nice, fresh bread. If you need the water butt changed give him your address (84 Char Kent) and it will be home before you.
This is the recommended way to buy your drinking water as it only costs 2 Tl for 20 litres.
The water in the tap is ok for cooking but not for the whiskey.
On your way into the complex, by the Turkey Telecom building you will see the local farmers stall selling fruit and vegetables at a very low price, (keep your shrapnel for him) so don't expect him to change large notes.
Down by the beach you will find lots of small stalls selling lots of things you don't need. Before you get to the beach, by the bus stop, you will find our two local shops for your fresh bread.
Out on the main road into town about 1.5 miles from the house we have a very nice supermarket (Mikos) and next to this is the open market where you can find the best copy designer labels this side of Hong Kong.
If you like good whiskey, rum or brandy then either buy them on the plane or in the duty free at the airport when you arrive (yes they have a duty free on arrival). Any other drinks like Gin Vodka and beer is very good and cheep locally.
The vegetables in this area are absolutely gorgeous and I can recommend the potatoes particularly.
If you go to the fresh food markets you will see cabbages the size of dustbin lids that must weigh all of twenty plus pounds, radish the size of oranges and eggs that are all guaranteed to be double yoker's. We might when we are over in May, buy one of them baskets on wheels. If we do then take it with you when you shop, as you will need it.
Have a good shop and then home to enjoy it.
