Benissa
Benissa, which combines warmth and Mediterranean character, is placed at a pleasant green and blue landscape, which has wisely and easily adapted itself to the tourist demand, thus enjoying an advisable way of life.
Its own architecture style fits its environment conditions both functionally and aesthetically.
THE COASTLINE. Light, clear, crisp and clean horizons, cliffs, uneven rocks and sandy cosmopolitan-style spots are all harboured in our four-kilometres long coastline creeks: Les Bassetes, La Fustera, Els Pinets, La Llobella, Advocat and Baladrar. These natural charms constitute the coastline behind the mountains.
"Les Bassetes" Yacht Club was inaugurated in 1970. It is in the south of Benissa's coastline, bordering the district of Calpe. It has got 80 moorings for eight-metres boats. Outstanding, among its activities are the Sailing School, well-known throughout Europe, and the Diving School that awards a worlwide recognised qualification. There is also a possibility to practise sports such as; kayak, scuba diving, windsurfing and catamaran sailing. By the end of June and beginning of July an important Autonomic regatta is held and at the end there is a picnic for all the participants. Every August, 15th, the Day of the Club, a fiesta is celebrated.
The Historic Centre has been able to preserve its distinct medieval character: white walls, grids, coats of arms, and flowers at balconies. The Renaissance-style Lonja de Contratación (Trade Exchange), built up in the fifteenth century, consists of three wings and has a three-span masonry work arcade in the ground floor. Whereas it used to be an important spot in the town. Our present Town Hall is placed at the spot which had been formerly (1.790) intended to be the seat of the Hospital for the Poor. It is also necessary to move back several centuries in order to meet our local Culture Centre (a small eighteenth-century palace), which leads to two characteristic local spots, i.e., Calle Desamparados and Plaza Jaume I.
There are plenty of houses embellished with large engraved doorways and wrought iron grids along Calle Desamparados.
One of Benissa's symbols is the "Riberero" Memorial, who appears in kneeling position as the "Ribereros" used to pray facing the town from the last place in the road where Benissa could be seen.
A golden age for arts and literature was brewing beyond the Pyrenees when our Franciscan Friars decided to build a Renaissance-style monastery in Benissa. Likewise, our town harbours the well-known Neogothic-style Catedral de la Marina (Marina Cathedral). This Cathedral is both beautiful and very recent as it was built in the twentieth century.
Benissa can also be known by way of its flavours and scents. The Valencian gastronomy is completed here through its original and tasty dishes, its spices, seafood, fruits and vegetables, and a special care which turns the food on your table into a special morsel.
Names such as "Borreta de melva", "Bull amb ceba", "Mullador de pelleta", "Sang amb ceba", "Putxero de polp", "Mullador de sagatxo", "Coques al calfó i amb mullador" whet everybody's appetite.
The variety of rice dishes is nearly endless. Specially remarkable are "arròs al forn", "arròs amb fava pelada", "arròs amb fessols i naps", "arròs de senyoret", "arròs a banda" and many more.
Hand-made sausages deserve a special mentioned. They have carried both Benissa's and the Marina's names all over the nation thanks to their delicious flavours and to the ancient recipes still used by local butchers.
