The Gîte
La Chartreuse is a beautifully appointed conversion of a traditional Perigordian farmhouse. It is located on a working ferme-auberge 10 minutes from Bergerac in the Perigord Pourpre. The house is over 250 years old and has been tastefully renovated so as to preserve the original carpentry and stonework whilst also providing an extremely comfortable living space with all mod-cons. The property comprises a spacious living/dining room with a large open fireplace, a kitchen, a laundry, a South-facing terrace, 2 bathrooms (one with a corner bath and the other a shower), 2 toilets and 3 bedrooms: one double, one twin and one containing three single beds.

The Setting
La Ferme de Biorne is a small-scale mixed farm combining gastronomic excellence with a traditional country way of life (www.ferme-biorne.com). The restaurant is popular with both locals and tourists and serves dishes using the fresh produce of the farm, including foie gras and duck confits. The farm seeks to work in harmony with nature. Its agricultural ethos is free-range, self-sufficient and low impact. La Chartreuse is the smaller of two gîtes situated beside the large swimming pool (shared with the other gite) in an area of parkland beyond the farm's delightful menagerie of donkeys, doves and peacocks. Although part of a working farm, the gite is totally self-contained offering renters complete privacy.

The Area
Biorne is in the heart of ‘Purple Perigord', the area of the Dordogne named after the deep red of Bergerac wines. Within an hour's drive it is possible to visit the world-famous Lascaux cave-paintings and the other Cro-Magnon sites at Les Eyzies, the breathtaking valleys of the Dordogne and the Vézère, the fortified villages of Monpazier and Issigeac, the ‘Route du Vin' containing the Bergerac and Monbazillac vineyards, the historic towns of Sarlat and Périgueux, and numerous chateaux.
