Welcome to Rjukan… Just a selection of activities Winter & Summer.
Rjukan has been called the "cradle of tourism in Norway". The magnificent Rjukan Waterfall was already a famous tourist attraction as early as the 18th century. Rjukan is famous for the brave feats of the heavy water saboteurs and the events that took place there during the Second World War. The fight for the heavy water was one of the most successful sabotage actions during the whole of the War. Nature has been kind in her gift of Gaustatoppen to Rjukan, which many call the most beautiful mountain in Norway. Gaustatoppen towers majestically over the town, 1,883 metres above sea level. Rjukan is the southern gateway to Norway's largest national park, the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. The first cable car to be built in northern Europe (Krossobanen), provides visitors with raid access to Hardangervidda.
The Saboteur's trail - Guided trips The Saboteur trail is the way the world-famous Norwegian Resistance used during the Second World War to get from the Hardangervidda mountain plain and down the steep gorge to Vemork to blow up the heavy water factory. The trail is 8km long, well marked and starts off from Rjukan Fjellstue. There are boards along the way that tell the story. Guided tours along the Saboteur trail are available in the spring, summer and autumn. The trip takes around two hours. Diploma for children. Rjukan is a small, lively town with , a cinema, lots of shops, cafés and restaurants and a swimming pool!
Summer Activities...
The mountains around Rjukan are ideal for all sorts of hikes and excursions, fishing and outdoor pursuits. You can hike along marked trails, or go your own way using a map and compass. Most of Tinn's 2,200km3 consists of mountainous terrain, with forests and idyllic lakes. If you want an active holiday, there are plenty of opportunities here to tempt you. You can wander for miles along marked trails or go pony trekking on the Hardangervidda mountain plateau and enjoy the superb scenery. Or perhaps do a bit of fishing in the hundreds of lakes and tarns, or don a pair of waders and try a spot of river fishing. You can hire canoes, boats and bikes, or go hunting for elk and other wild animals with a camera or a rifle during the hunting season! There are plenty of fascinating buildings and local arts and crafts to see at the many museums, alpine pasture farms and handicrafts centres, and lots of exotic indigenous animals. The Hardangervidda is the largest mountain plateau in Europe. This is where you will find Norway's largest national park. The scenery is varied with steep mountainsides and spectacular views. Most of the area is easy to hike in.
Winter Activities ... Skiing
Gaustablikk Skisenter ... Gaustablikk has been the first resort to get snow in Norway for eleven years running and it is a favourite training ground for some of the best skiers in the world. But Gaustablikk is not only for the élite. There are slopes here for all the family, all ages and all levels of experience. The ski centre has 6 ski lifts and a total of 17 slalom slopes, the longest of which is 2,200 metres in length. The ski centre also boasts its own snowboard slope. The children's lift is free. There are 80km of prepared cross-country skiing trails, although preparation of the longest trail depends on the weather. In the winter there are sleigh rides at set times from Gaustablikk. This winter there will also be a baby llama present. It is also possible to order horses outside the set days and at other places in the area. ICE CLIMBING... Rjukan is reckoned to be the best venue in northern Europe for ice climbing. More than 140 frozen waterfalls and a particularly long and stable winter season make conditions attractive to climbers from around the world. There is plenty to do in the Rjukan area... but maybe its good to just relax...with a good book...!
