Casa Sulo Apartments
Casa Sulo, Alombada, your holiday destination, is situated in an idyllic rural working village at the top of a mountain surrounded by the refreshing fragrance of eucalyptus forests and uninterrupted views over the distant mountains of the Serra de Arada.
It is suitable for all age groups, families, reunions or just couples who want a relaxing break. However, there is no wheelchair access and it is not suitable for the chronically ill or infirm.
The two purpose built self-catering apartments are of the highest standard with your comfort in mind. Before breakfast pick your own figs, nectarines, olives and grapes when in season, and as the citrus orchards mature, oranges, lemons, and limes – they taste better fresh off the tree!
From Porto airport take the easy drive southwards along the A1 / E1 over the river Douro towards Albergaria a Velha. This takes you into the real Portugal with its spectacular scenery, and people who are famed for their traditional way of life and hospitality.
The 2 apartments sleep 4-6. There is an insulated connecting door between the two apartments for larger parties if required and group bookings, e.g. yoga, meditation, painting, walking, birdwatching. Each comprises one double and one twin bedroom, both with en-suite and shower. All bedding and towels are provided. There is also a double bed settee in each lounge area
The fully fitted kitchen includes a fridge / freezer, gas cooker and washing machine. Cooler bags and ice blocks are provided for use during your stay. In each apartment there are the usual consumables, for example tea, coffee, sauce, condiments, washing up liquid, etc. We adopt an honesty policy – if an item runs out during your stay, just replace it with a similar product. For your convenience we keep a limited supply of groceries which can be purchased at cost.
On your arrival a free starter pack is provided, usually consisting of milk, eggs, spread, bread, preserve, a bottle of white wine in the fridge and red wine on table.
We have, for those visitors who need to keep in touch with e-mails etc., wire-less connectivity to broadband from the apartments. All you need is your laptop and we have the WLAN cards which we rent out for a small charge. This will give you 24 hour connection any time during your stay.
The Local Area
There is plenty to do and see throughout the Costa Verde / Beiras region with local markets supplying everything from fresh fish, meat, vegetables and dairy produce to pottery and livestock. Try your bartering skills!
We recommend a car for your stay. Albergaria a Velha is our closest town (15 minutes drive away) with several good cafés en route. It has plenty of first class traditional restaurants at prices we can all afford; a two course meal for two people with wine; €14 (£10) approx., or try a small café and reduce the cost to around €10 (£7)!
Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal, boasts every modern amenity but still retains its old charm. Take a boat trip in a traditional brightly painted moliceiros (fishing boat). Or relax over an al-fresco meal watching the world go by before wandering through the myriad of narrow cobbled streets bustling with life throughout the day and long into the night. Costa Nova boasts miles of beautiful unspoilt golden sandy beaches with the North Atlantic Rollers waiting to be discovered.
Visit the 12th century city of Porto on the banks of the River Douro, a city proud of its status as the founder of the Portuguese nation. There is a strong English influence there with port wine being “created” by two Englishmen in the 17th Century who added brandy to preserve the local wine. Port. Visit the world famous port wine cellars for a tasting followed by a boat trip along the river Douro.
Later, return to Casa Sulo and prepare the food bought fresh that day. Take a dip in the pool, have a cold beer or a vinho do porto branco – fresco (white port, chilled) as a pre-dinner aperitif and afterwards chat long into the night surrounded by the stars (no light pollution), the odd owl hoot and the occasional grunt of a wild boar going about its business in one of the neighbouring fields.
Driving and Finding
For golfers, the Montebelo Golf and Leisure Club at Viseu, is one of the best golf courses you can play. For the non-golfers why not make use of its extensive leisure and club facilities. There is also a horse riding stables within the same complex.
If you enjoy “driving and finding” take the back roads over the mountains to Viseu; a walled and ancient city full of character, charm, hospitality and old fashioned service – we bought a pack of aspirin in the pharmacy. They gift wrapped it in tissue before handing it over - we still haven't opened it!
There are too many experiences in the region to mention in detail. Space and time do not permit but it would be remiss not to mention the regional dish of leitão (roast suckling pig) served with green salad and a garafe of chilled white wine in a small local café; Visit the ancient and beautiful university city of Coimbra; Vouzela for the world famous pasteis – a flaky sweet pastry to die for; fishing for bream, trout and barbell on the rivers Vouga, Dão, or Paiva. Or just spend quality time by the pool unwinding while time drifts by.
We are off the beaten track and safe.
